Common Moving Mistakes & How to Avoid Them
Most moving damage, delays, and budget overruns are caused by the same common moving mistakes that families make over and over again. Overpacked boxes that split open. TVs without specialty boxes. No mattress bags in Florida rain. Hiring the cheapest quote without verifying credentials. Starting to pack the night before. Every one of these mistakes is preventable, and every one of them costs you time, money, or irreplaceable belongings. Frank & Sons Moving and Storage has been moving Southwest Florida families since 1982. After four decades and thousands of moves, we know exactly which mistakes cause the most damage and exactly how to avoid them. This guide will save you from learning these lessons the hard way.
Southwest Florida's Most Trusted Movers
Decades of honest service, thousands of satisfied families and businesses, and a reputation built one careful move at a time.
After four decades of moving Southwest Florida families, Frank & Sons Moving and Storage has seen the same mistakes repeated thousands of times. The family that waited until the night before to start packing. The homeowner who hired the cheapest quote online and got a crew in an unmarked truck. The couple who packed their entire book collection into three large boxes that weighed 90 pounds each and split open on the driveway. The retiree who left a flat-screen TV leaning against the garage wall with no box and no padding. Every one of these common moving mistakes resulted in damaged belongings, wasted money, unnecessary stress, or all three. And every one of them was completely preventable.
This guide covers the most frequent and most costly mistakes we see on moves across Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Naples, Bonita Springs, Estero, North Fort Myers, Punta Gorda, Port Charlotte, North Port, Englewood, Sanibel Island, and Pine Island. More importantly, it tells you exactly how to avoid each one so your move goes smoothly, your belongings arrive safely, and your budget stays intact.
Mistake 1: Waiting Too Long to Start Packing
This is the most common mistake and it causes more downstream problems than any other. Families tell themselves they will start packing "next weekend" until suddenly it is two days before the move and the entire house needs to be boxed up. Last-minute packing means rushed wrapping, fragile items thrown into boxes without protection, unlabeled boxes that create chaos at the new home, and the kind of exhausted decision-making that leads to broken dishes and lost valuables.
Mistake 2: Using the Wrong Boxes and Cheap Materials
Free boxes from the liquor store, used grocery boxes, and boxes that have been sitting in the garage for years are the leading cause of crushed, water-damaged, and improperly packed belongings. These boxes have weakened walls, no structural integrity when stacked, and often cannot be sealed properly. A box that collapses in the middle of the truck drops its contents onto whatever is below it. Multiply that by five or ten bad boxes and you have a cascade of damage that affects items that were packed perfectly.
Mistake 3: Overpacking Boxes
The single most predictable moving disaster is the overweight box. A large box filled with books weighs 80 to 100 pounds. The bottom will fail when a mover lifts it, the contents will spill onto the driveway, and the books at the bottom will be scuffed or damaged. Even when the box holds together, a 100-pound box is a back injury waiting to happen, and no mover should be expected to lift it safely. The rule is simple: heavy items go in small boxes, light items go in large boxes.
Mistake 4: Not Labeling Boxes (or Labeling Them Badly)
A box labeled "Stuff" or "Kitchen" or "Misc" is almost useless at the new home. When you are looking for the coffee maker at 7 AM on the first morning, and you have 12 boxes all labeled "Kitchen," you are opening every single one until you find it. Multiply that by every room and every item you need in the first 24 hours, and the unpacking process becomes a treasure hunt that wastes hours and creates frustration.
Mistake 5: Hiring a Mover Based Only on Price
The cheapest quote is almost never the best value. It is usually either a scam mover who will double the price after loading (see our Moving Scam Red Flags guide), a broker who will subcontract your job to the lowest bidder, or an unlicensed crew in a rented truck with no insurance and no accountability. The families we see who have been burned by bad movers almost always say the same thing: "They were the cheapest quote."
Mistake 6: Forgetting the Essentials Box
You arrive at the new home. The truck will not be unloaded for another two hours. Your phone is at 3% battery. Your toothbrush is in a box labeled "Bathroom" that is buried behind 40 other boxes. Your child's medications are somewhere on the truck. The sheets and pillows for tonight are packed in unmarked boxes. You are standing in an empty house with nothing you need immediately.
Mistake 7: Not Protecting Furniture for Florida Weather
In most of the country, an unwrapped couch on a truck is fine. In Southwest Florida, a sudden afternoon thunderstorm can dump inches of rain in 20 minutes, and a mattress or upholstered furniture piece that gets wet between the truck and the front door is potentially ruined. Mold grows fast in Florida humidity, and a wet couch cushion can develop mildew within 24 hours.
Mistake 8: Leaving Heat-Sensitive Items on the Truck
A moving truck parked in the Southwest Florida sun reaches 140+ degrees inside within 30 minutes. Candles melt into the box below them. Vinyl records warp permanently. Chocolate stains everything it touches. Cosmetics and medications degrade. Electronics overheat. And photographs stored in cardboard boxes absorb humidity and stick together. These are not hypothetical scenarios. We see them on Florida moves every summer.
Mistake 9: Not Measuring Furniture for the New Home
The sectional that fit perfectly in the old living room does not fit through the hallway of the new home. The king-size bed frame cannot make the turn into the new master bedroom. The dining table is too large for the new dining room. These discoveries on moving day are devastating because there is no time to fix them, and the movers are on the clock while you figure out what to do with a couch that is stuck in a hallway.
Mistake 10: Trying to Do It All Yourself
Renting a truck and moving yourself seems like a money-saver until you factor in the reality: the truck rental, the insurance, the fuel, the dolly rental, the packing materials, the pizza and beer for the friends who agreed to help (and the friend who threw out their back on the dresser), the two days of lost work, the scratched floors, the dented walls, the broken lamp, and the marriage-testing argument about which box goes in the truck first. DIY moves are cheaper on paper and more expensive in practice.
Every one of these common moving mistakes is preventable. Start packing early, use proper boxes, do not overpack, label everything, verify your mover's credentials, pack an essentials box, protect against Florida weather and heat, measure your furniture, and get a professional quote before going DIY. Frank & Sons Moving and Storage has been helping Southwest Florida families avoid these mistakes since 1982. Licensed. Insured. Family-owned. And experienced enough to know exactly what goes wrong when it is not done right.

Frank and Sons Moving and Storage was simply incredible. We were moving locally in Cape Coral, and our plans were continuously changing through the last few days leading up to the move. They were easy to work with as our plans kept changing, and never once hesitated to do what we needed to get moved. They were always available to contact to give them the latest update. The team showed up exactly when we needed them and even dealt with a change that we needed at that moment. They took our stuff and not knowing in advance, were able to keep it in their possession for two days until we needed them to drop it off, With no hesitation and anxious to help us. We can’t say enough good things about them and the whole team they were awesome!Posted on Google Juanita DAnnaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
