Red Flag 1: No Written Estimate or a Phone-Only Quote

A legitimate moving company will provide a written estimate after assessing the size and scope of your move, either through an in-home visit, a video survey, or at minimum a detailed conversation about your inventory, access challenges, and distance. A scam mover will give you a suspiciously low number over the phone in 30 seconds without asking about your home size, the number of rooms, the weight of your belongings, staircase access, or any of the details that determine the actual cost of a move. That low number is the bait. On moving day, after your belongings are loaded on the truck, the price doubles or triples because of "stairs they did not know about," "heavy items that were not mentioned," or "additional cubic feet beyond the estimate." Red Flag 4: The Hostage Load

This is the most devastating moving scam, and it happens more often than people realize. Here is how it works: the movers load your belongings onto the truck. Once everything is loaded, they inform you that the price has increased significantly, sometimes by double or triple the original quote, citing reasons like additional weight, additional time, or fees that were never discussed. If you refuse to pay, they refuse to unload. Your belongings are literally held hostage on their truck. Some scam movers will even drive away with your belongings and demand payment before they will tell you where your items are stored. Others will hold your items in a warehouse and charge daily storage fees until you pay the inflated price.

How to protect yourself: Get a written binding estimate or a binding not-to-exceed estimate before the move. A binding estimate means the price is guaranteed regardless of actual weight or time. A binding not-to-exceed estimate means you will pay the estimated price or less, but never more. Never hire a mover who only provides a non-binding estimate with vague language about additional charges. And never sign anything on moving day that changes the agreed-upon price unless you fully understand and agree to the change. If a mover tries to increase the price after loading, call the police and file a complaint with the FMCSA and the Florida Attorney General.

Red Flag 5: Unmarked Trucks and No Uniforms

A legitimate moving company has branded trucks with the company name, phone number, and DOT number displayed on the side. This is not just marketing. It is a legal requirement for interstate movers, and it signals that the company is established, accountable, and willing to put their name on their work. A scam mover shows up in a rented Penske, U-Haul, or Budget truck with no company identification, or in an unmarked white truck with no name, no number, and no DOT information. The crew may be wearing plain clothes with no company identification. If the truck and the crew have no identifying information, there is no way to track them if they drive away with your belongings.

Red Flag 6: The Moving Broker Who Is Not Actually a Mover

Instead, they sell your job to the lowest bidder, which is often an unlicensed crew with a rented truck. A legitimate moving company has a physical location where they store their trucks and equipment, a history in the community, and a track record that you can verify.
