How to Pack Clothes Movers Southwest Florida
Clothes are the most personal items in your home, and packing them wrong means wrinkles, mildew, stains, and damage that ruins your favorite pieces. In Southwest Florida, humidity and heat add risks that most packing guides ignore entirely. These clothes packing tips from Frank & Sons Moving and Storage cover everything: wardrobe boxes for hanging clothes, vacuum bags for seasonal storage, the dresser drawer shortcut, garment bags for formal wear, shoe packing, accessory protection, and Florida-specific humidity precautions that keep your wardrobe safe from the truck to the closet. Trusted by Southwest Florida families since 1982.
Southwest Florida's Most Trusted Movers
Decades of Proven Service
Moreover, with decades of honest service, thousands of satisfied families and businesses, and a reputation built one careful move at a time, our results speak for themselves.
Clothes are usually the last thing people think about when packing for a move, and that is exactly why they end up wrinkled, musty, stained, or damaged on the other side. Most families throw their clothes into garbage bags, toss them loose in the trunk, or leave them in dresser drawers without any protection and hope for the best. In a mild climate, you might get away with it. In Southwest Florida, where summer truck temperatures can exceed 140 degrees and humidity regularly sits above 80%, that approach can turn a closet full of clean clothes into a damp, wrinkled, mildew-prone mess before the truck even reaches your new home.
Frank & Sons Moving and Storage has been packing and moving Southwest Florida families since 1982. We have packed everything from a studio apartment wardrobe to a walk-in closet with hundreds of garments, formal wear collections, designer shoes, and accessories worth more than the furniture. These tips on how to pack clothes for moving are the same methods our professional packing crews use on every job, and they will keep your wardrobe protected whether you are moving across Fort Myers, relocating from Cape Coral to Naples, or arriving in Southwest Florida from out of state.
Wardrobe Boxes The Best Way to Move Hanging Clothes
A wardrobe box is a tall, sturdy moving box with a built-in metal hanging bar across the top. Your clothes go directly from the closet rod to the wardrobe box, still on their hangers, still in order, still wrinkle-free. At the new home, you lift the hangers out of the wardrobe box and hang them directly in the new closet. No folding. No wrinkling. No re-ironing. No reorganizing. A standard wardrobe box holds approximately two feet of closet rod worth of clothing, which is roughly 15 to 20 garments depending on thickness. For a typical closet, plan on three to five wardrobe boxes.
Wardrobe boxes are the single best investment you can make when packing clothes for a move. They cost more than standard boxes, but when you consider the time saved by not folding, not ironing, not re-organizing, and the protection they provide against wrinkles, creases, and floor contact, they pay for themselves immediately. Frank & Sons provides wardrobe boxes as part of our packing service, and we also sell them individually if you are packing yourself. One pro tip: use the bottom of the wardrobe box for shoes. The space below the hanging clothes is perfect for a row of shoes that would otherwise need their own separate box.
How to Pack Folded Clothes for a Move
Not everything hangs. T-shirts, jeans, sweaters, workout clothes, pajamas, and casual wear that normally lives in drawers or on shelves needs a different approach. The best options, in order of effectiveness:
The Dresser Drawer Shortcut When to Use It and When Not To
One of the most common questions we get is whether clothes can stay in the dresser drawers during a move. The answer is: it depends on the dresser and what is in the drawers. If the dresser is a modern, well-built piece with drawers that stay closed during tilting, and the drawers contain only lightweight clothing like t-shirts, socks, and underwear, you can leave the clothes in the drawers. Cover the front of each drawer with stretch wrap so it cannot slide open during transport, and the movers will handle the dresser with the clothes inside. This saves packing time and box space.
However, remove the clothes if: the dresser is antique or fragile and the extra weight could damage the joints or legs, the drawers contain anything heavy, the drawers do not stay closed when the dresser is tilted, or the dresser has glass mirrors or decorative elements that could break under the added weight. Removing the clothes and moving the dresser empty is always the safer option, and for valuable or antique furniture, it is the only option. When in doubt, take the clothes out. A lighter dresser is a safer dresser.
How to Pack Formal Wear Suits, Dresses, and Delicate Garments
Suits, evening gowns, cocktail dresses, silk blouses, linen garments, and any clothing that wrinkles easily or has delicate construction requires extra protection beyond a standard wardrobe box.
How to Pack Shoes and Accessories
Shoes should be packed in pairs, either in their original boxes if you kept them, or wrapped in packing paper with the pair rubber-banded together and placed in a medium box or at the bottom of a wardrobe box. Stuff shoes with packing paper to maintain their shape. For expensive or delicate shoes, wrap each one individually and separate them with paper to prevent scuffing. Do not pack shoes loose in a box without wrapping. They will scuff each other, and any dirt on the soles will transfer to everything they touch.
Jewelry should travel with you personally, never on the truck. Place jewelry in a small lockable case or zip-lock bags organized by type, and transport it in your car. For costume jewelry, leave it in the jewelry box with each compartment covered by a piece of plastic wrap to keep items from tangling and shifting. Belts can be rolled and placed in shoes or tucked into the gaps in a suitcase. Hats should be stuffed with packing paper to maintain their shape and placed in a box large enough that they are not crushed. Handbags should be stuffed with tissue paper, placed in dust bags if you have them, and packed in a box where they will not be compressed by heavier items.
Florida Humidity Protection for Your Clothes
Southwest Florida humidity is the hidden enemy of clothing during a move. Even a few hours in a hot, humid truck can cause problems that do not appear until you unpack.

Frank and Sons Moving and Storage was simply incredible. We were moving locally in Cape Coral, and our plans were continuously changing through the last few days leading up to the move. They were easy to work with as our plans kept changing, and never once hesitated to do what we needed to get moved. They were always available to contact to give them the latest update. The team showed up exactly when we needed them and even dealt with a change that we needed at that moment. They took our stuff and not knowing in advance, were able to keep it in their possession for two days until we needed them to drop it off, With no hesitation and anxious to help us. We can’t say enough good things about them and the whole team they were awesome!Posted on Google Juanita DAnnaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
