Wrap each glass individually in packing paper, stuff the inside with crumpled paper, and place them upside down in the box. Stemware gets extra bubble wrap around the stem. Knives go in knife guards or wrapped in cardboard sheaths for both protection and safety. Small appliances should have their cords taped to the body so nothing dangles or catches. If you still have the original box for a blender, food processor, or stand mixer, use it. Those boxes were designed for that exact item.

How to Pack Fragile and High-Value Items

Crystal and china get individual wrapping in packing paper, then bubble wrap, then placement in a dish pack box with crumpled paper filling every gap. No item should touch another item, and no item should be able to shift when the box is gently shaken. If it rattles, add more paper. Framed artwork and mirrors get painter's tape in an X pattern across the glass (so if it does crack, the pieces stay in place), then corner protectors, then placement in a mirror box. Electronics should be backed up before packing, cables labeled with masking tape, and if possible photographed before disconnecting so you know exactly how to reconnect at the new home. Lamps get the shade removed and packed separately in a box with crumpled paper inside the shade to maintain its shape. The base gets wrapped and boxed individually.

The Essentials Box Your First-Night Survival Kit

Pack one clearly labeled box that travels with you in the car, not on the truck. This is your first-night essentials box, and it contains everything you need to function for the first 24 hours without unpacking anything else: phone chargers, medications, toiletries, a change of clothes for each family member, bed sheets and pillowcases, a few towels, toilet paper, paper towels, hand soap, a basic tool kit (screwdriver, pliers, box cutter), paper plates and cups, a coffee maker and coffee, snacks, pet food and bowls if applicable, and any important documents you do not want in the truck. This box means you can take a shower, sleep in a made bed, make coffee in the morning, and function as a human being while the rest of the house gets unpacked over the next few days.
