On moving day, your entire household splits into two categories: things the movers carry and things you carry. Most people focus entirely on the first category and forget the second until they are standing in their new home at 9 PM, the movers are gone, the boxes are stacked in the living room, and they realize their toothbrush is somewhere in box 47 of 120, their phone charger is buried under kitchen supplies, and their child's bedtime medication is in a box marked "bathroom" that could be any of six boxes. The items you move yourself are the items that keep your family functional during the 24-48 hours when your household is in transition. Pack them separately. Keep them in your car. And never let them go on the truck.

1. Identification, Financial, and Legal Documents

These are irreplaceable and take weeks or months to replace if lost. Passports, birth certificates, Social Security cards, marriage certificates, wills, trusts, powers of attorney, property deeds, vehicle titles, insurance policies (homeowners, auto, health, life), tax returns (last 3 years minimum), and any active legal documents related to your move (closing paperwork, lease agreements, HOA documents). Place them in a waterproof folder or fireproof document bag. In Florida's humidity and thunderstorm environment, waterproof protection is not optional. These documents travel in your vehicle, not in a moving box.

2. Medications and Medical Supplies

This is the category people forget most often and regret most severely. All prescription medications for every family member, including the ones you only take occasionally. Over-the-counter medications you use regularly: pain relievers, allergy medication, antacids, sleep aids. First aid supplies: bandaids, antiseptic, gauze, medical tape. If any family member uses medical devices (CPAP machine, blood pressure monitor, glucose meter, nebulizer), those travel with you. In Florida, medications left in a 140-degree moving truck degrade rapidly. Heat destroys insulin, melts gel capsules, and reduces the effectiveness of many common medications. Keep all medications in your air-conditioned car, never on the truck.

3. Valuables and Irreplaceable Items

If it cannot be replaced, it should not be on the truck. Jewelry, family heirlooms, photo albums (especially pre-digital prints that have no backup), external hard drives with family photos and documents, collectibles with sentimental value, inherited items, and anything whose loss would cause emotional distress beyond its dollar value. Moving companies carry insurance, but insurance pays replacement value, not sentimental value. Your grandmother's engagement ring, your child's baby book, and the only print of your parents' wedding photo are priceless to you and worth $0 to an insurance adjuster. These items go in your car.

4. Electronics and Chargers

Your phone charger, laptop, laptop charger, tablet, and any device you use daily must be accessible from the moment you leave your old home until you are settled in your new one. You will need your phone for GPS navigation to the new house, for communication with the movers, for ordering food when the kitchen is packed, and for entertainment for kids during the transition. Pack all chargers in a single zip-lock bag so they do not scatter across multiple boxes. If you work remotely, your laptop and work equipment should travel with you. Florida heat warning: never leave electronics in a parked car in the Florida sun. If you stop for lunch, take your electronics bag inside with you. A car interior reaches 140+ degrees in 15 minutes, which can permanently damage lithium batteries and screens.

5. Essentials Box: First Night at the New Home

Pack one clearly labeled box or bag with everything your family needs for the first night. The movers may not finish unloading until evening. You may be too exhausted to unpack anything beyond the bare minimum. Your essentials box should include: bed sheets and pillows for every family member, towels and washcloths, toilet paper, hand soap, paper towels, basic cleaning supplies (all-purpose spray, paper towels), trash bags, a change of clothes for the next morning, pajamas, phone chargers (backup set), a nightlight for children, and any comfort items for kids or pets. This box goes in your car, not on the truck, and it is the first thing that comes into the new house.

6. Snacks, Water, and Cash

Moving day is physically and mentally exhausting, and you will not have a functional kitchen for hours. Pack a cooler with water bottles, sports drinks, and snacks that do not need refrigeration: granola bars, crackers, fruit, peanut butter, bread. Bring enough for your family and, if you choose, for the moving crew. Cold water is the most appreciated item you can offer movers working in Florida's 90+ degree heat. Carry cash for tips (if you choose to tip the crew), for takeout food at the new house, and for any unexpected small expenses. Many businesses near your new home may not take cards if you have not set up accounts yet, and your go-to delivery apps may default to your old address for the first few days.

7. Pet and Child Essentials

If you have pets or young children, their essentials are your highest priority after documents and medications. For pets: food (enough for 3 days in case unpacking takes longer than expected), food and water bowls, leash and collar with ID tags, medications, litter and litter box for cats, a crate or carrier, favorite toy or blanket, and vaccination records (you may need these if your new community requires pet registration). For children: diapers and wipes, formula or baby food, favorite stuffed animal or blanket, a few toys and books, snacks, a change of clothes, and any sleep-time necessities (sound machine, night light, pacifier). 8. Keys, Remotes, and Access Items

On moving day, access items disappear into boxes faster than anything else. Keys to your new home (and copies for family members). Garage door remotes for the new house. Gate access cards, fobs, or codes for gated communities. Mailbox keys. Storage unit keys if you are using one. Alarm codes and WiFi passwords for the new home, written down on paper, not just saved in your phone (your phone may die, and your charger may be in a box). If your new home has a smart lock, make sure the app is installed and configured before moving day. If your new community requires a resident pass or vehicle registration sticker, bring the documentation needed to obtain it on day one. Tape the new house keys to the inside of your essentials box so they are impossible to lose.
